War of Words

Eligibility

  • The event is open to all participating colleges under the BuildTech Inter-College Competition.
  • Each college may nominate 2–4 participants (depending on event format: individual or team-based).

Participants must carry valid college ID cards

Theme & Format

  • “War of Words” is a verbal battle / debate-based competitive event designed to test communication, logic, spontaneity, and persuasive skills.
  • The competition may include:
    • Round 1: Just-a-Minute (JAM) / Elimination Round
    • Round 2: Topic-Based Debate (2 participants per team)
    • Round 3 (Final): Rebuttal Round / Rapid-Fire Cross Questioning

Themes will relate to technology, innovation, sustainability, business, and current trends.

General Rules

  1. Participants must report 30 minutes prior to the event start time.
  2. Topics will be provided on the spot or 15 minutes before, depending on the round.
  3. Use of offensive language, personal attacks, or derogatory remarks is strictly prohibited.
  4. The decision of the judges will be final and binding.
  5. Any form of malpractice, prompting, or disruptive behaviour may lead to immediate disqualification.
  6. Interruption of opponents is only allowed in designated rebuttal segments.
  7. Time limits must be strictly followed. Exceeding time may result in point deduction.

Scoring Criteria

Participants/teams will be evaluated on the following:

  • Content Quality & Relevance – 25%
  • Clarity of Speech & Articulation – 20%
  • Confidence & Stage Presence – 15%
  • Logic, Rebuttal & Argument Strength – 25%
  • Adherence to Time – 15%

Time Duration

  • Round 1: 1 minute – speaking without hesitation, repetition, or deviation.
  • Round 2: 3 minutes per speaker + 1 minute rebuttal.
  • Final Round: 5 minutes team discussion + 2-minute open rebuttal.

Team Structure (if team-based)

  • A team must have 2 speakers.
  • Both speakers must contribute equally.

Disqualification Grounds

  • Plagiarized or pre-scripted content (where spontaneity is required).
  • Use of mobile phones or gadgets during performance.
  • Misconduct or violation of event discipline.

Awards & Recognition

  • Winner Team / Individual
  • Runner-Up
  • Best Speaker Award
  • Certificates for all participants.
